Dunukofia Fire Outbreak: Commissioner Visit Scene, Caution Against Bush Burning

Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Honourable Tony-CollinsNwabunwanne has paid inspection visit to Dunukofia Local Government Secretariat to ascertain level of damage done on Primary Health Centre, PHC, which was affected by fire outbreak on Wednesday night.

The Commissioner was received and led to the scene by the Transition Committee Chairman of Dunukofia Local Government Area, Mr. Augustine Onyemaobi.

Narrating the incident the Local Government Chairman Mr Onyemaobi said that the fire which was suspected to have been started by herders emanated from the bush behind the Secretariat and affected part of the Primary Health Centre, a detached bungalow built by the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, about four hundred miles away from the Secretariat Complex.

He alleged that the herders usually ignite fire in the bushes with the intention of burning the dried grasses to give way for the fresh ones on which their cattle will be grazed, adding that the State Fire Service was on ground to contain the fire and prevent the Primary Health Centre building from being razed.

Speaking at the scene, the Commissioner frowned at the reckless act of the bush burners who were suspected to be the cause of the fire.

He also commended the State Fire Service for their prompt response that prevented the building from total collapse.

Commissioner Nwabunwanne and his monitoring team later proceeded to the Afor-igwe market in Umudioka, to inspect the ongoing barricading of the market by the Local Government Transition Committee Chairman.(ABS)
