Murder Of Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole, The Olukoro Of Koro In Kwara State

Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole

Fresh details reveal that the conspirators behind the murder of Oba Olusegun Aremu-Cole, the Olukoro of Koro in Kwara State, plotted the crime in a local pub in the town. The retired senior military officer was fatally shot on Thursday night as assailants invaded his palace, abducting his wife and two nearby residents.

According to The Punch, it was reported that Oba Aremu-Cole, who was crowned in 2017, would have turned 66 this year, having been born in 1958. The perpetrators strategically involved a salesgirl from the pub to guide them to the palace, situated in the area.

Sources in Koro shared with Saturday PUNCH on Friday that upon arriving in the town on Thursday evening, the assailants chose the pub to enjoy some drinks, in order to perfect their plans before going to the deceased’s palace.

It was reported that in a telephone interview with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, Mr. Adelaja Aremu, who happens to be the immediate younger brother to the slain monarch, recounted the tragic incident. He revealed that the assailants fatally shot his brother when he refused to comply with their orders to stand up and go with them.

He said, “I am his immediate younger brother and I live very close to the village. Immediately gunshots were heard in the palace, I was contacted and told the gunshots.”

Further talking, he said, “They (kidnappers) came into the palace and met him (the deceased) and asked him to stand up. They wanted to abduct him. He refused to get up, saying that nobody could command him like that. He refused to take orders from unknown people, so they shot in the air to scare him but he was not afraid.”

He added that the kidnappers of course knew that they have met a stubborn person, and that was the reason they shot him dead.

He said, “This was what the houseboy told us. He (houseboy) bolted out of the palace through the back door when my brother was shot, but he saw all that transpired.”
